What to Expect

February in Killington

Pack This

Pack This

  • February is the coldest month on the mountain. Layers matter more than a single heavy coat.

  • Thermal base layers, a waterproof shell, warm gloves, and a hat. Bring an extra pair of socks for ski days and something nicer for dinner.

What February Feels Like

What February Feels Like

  • Daytime temps on the mountain can run well below freezing, especially with wind. The village is warmer but still cold after dark.

  • Snow conditions are usually at their best in February. Check the mountain report the morning of any ski day for grooming and lift status.

Before You Head Out

Before You Head Out

  • Killington Mountain Report: Best source for daily conditions, lift status, and grooming.

  • New England 511: Useful for road conditions and any winter driving surprises on Route 4 or Route 100.

On the Mountain

Skiing Together

Killington is the biggest ski resort in the East, with terrain spread across six peaks. You don't need to be at the same level to have a good day together. Buy lift tickets online ahead of time: walk-up prices are higher and Valentine's weekend is busy. Check the mountain report the morning of your ski day for grooming, open lifts, and any closures. If one of you hasn't skied in a while, a lesson at the Killington Ski and Snowboard School is worth it. The resort also has a rental shop if you're not traveling with gear. For a quieter ski day, Pico Mountain is right next door. Smaller, less crowded, and a good option if you'd rather avoid the weekend rush at the main base areas.

Slow Down

Spa and Relaxation

A spa day is one of the easier Valentine's plans in Killington: no lift tickets, no gear, and a good reason to sleep in. The Killington Grand Spa at the Grand Resort Hotel offers massages, facials, and body treatments. Book ahead; Valentine's weekend fills up fast. If your rental has a hot tub, use it. February nights in Vermont are cold enough that sitting outside in a hot tub with a glass of wine is genuinely one of the better things you can do. For a longer spa day, Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa in Stowe is about an hour north and has one of the better spa facilities in Vermont. Worth the drive if you want to make a full day of it.

Outside Together

Snowshoeing and Winter Walks

If you'd rather be outside without the ski boots, snowshoeing is a good option. The trails around Killington are quiet in February, and you're unlikely to share them with many people. Thundering Brook Road is an easy starting point, flat enough to walk and talk, with good views when the sky is clear. The Appalachian Trail corridor near Gifford Woods State Park also has accessible winter trails. If you don't have snowshoes, call ahead to confirm rental availability in the area before Valentine's weekend.

Where to Eat

Dining

Call ahead. Most places on Killington Road fill up on Valentine's Day. On Killington Road The Foundry at Summit Pond is the best bet for a nicer dinner. Killington Distillery works well too: cocktails and good food without leaving the mountain. The Lookout is the casual option. Worth the Drive Roots in Rutland for farm-to-table. The Woodstock Inn & Resort is a classic Vermont Valentine's dinner, 30 minutes east on Route 4. Richardson's Tavern and the Red Rooster both take reservations, so book well ahead. Worthy Kitchen in Woodstock is the relaxed version of the same trip. Breakfast Sunup Bakery for coffee and pastries. Back Country Cafe for a sit-down. Sugar and Spice near Mendon for a maple-sugarhouse breakfast.
